Augustina Baidoo Retains Sheroes Title With Dramatic Comeback in Final
Defending champion Augustina Baidoo produced a remarkable comeback to retain her Sheroes Women’s Singles title, rallying from three games down to defeat her Ghana Army teammate Eva Adom-Amankwaa 4–3 in a thrilling final of the 2026 Ghana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) Sheroes Open. Baidoo, who topped Women’s Singles Group 4 without dropping a game, carried her dominant form into the knockout stage. She opened her main-draw campaign with a convincing 3–0 victory over Jessica Dzroh, before overpowering Agbottah Hilda 4–1 in the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals, the Army star showed composure and resilience to edge Cynthia Kwabi 4–3 in a closely contested encounter.
The final, however, tested Baidoo’s championship mettle to the limit. Facing compatriot Eva Adom-Amankwaa, Baidoo found herself 0–3 down as Eva dictated early proceedings with aggressive play and precise placement. With the title seemingly slipping away, the defending champion mounted an inspired comeback, winning four straight games to complete a stunning 4–3 turnaround and successfully defend her crown. Speaking in an interview with GTTA Media Head Nathaniel Kwesi Somuah, a visibly excited Baidoo described what was going through her mind when she found herself trailing early in the final:
“I just re-psyched myself because I realized I was too down compared to how I played with Cynthia Kwabi in the semi-finals. I told myself I had to be more involved in the game, so I did that and I won. I just told myself I can do it and I did. I am so much excited.” -Augustina Baidoo
Adom-Amankwaa had earlier impressed en route to the final, seeing off Emmanuella Yaa Kyere, Celia Baah-Danso, before defeating Joanita Borteye 4–1 in the semi-finals to set up an all-Army final.
Baidoo’s performance at the Sheroes Open continues what has been a rich period in her career. In 2023 she was crowned champion of the Tamale Table Tennis Open, demonstrating her ability to excel in high-pressure national competitions. That same year she and fellow star Bernice Borquaye were recognized by the Women in Sports Association (WISA) for their contributions to Ghanaian table tennis — a testament to her rising profile in the sport.
A proud representative of the Army table tennis squad, Baidoo’s aspirations extend beyond national titles. Earlier in her career she publicly stated her ambition “to become Africa’s table tennis queen,” illustrating the depth of her competitive drive and commitment to raising her game on the continental stage.
Baidoo’s triumph in the 2026 Sheroes Open underscores her consistency and mental strength, having gone unbeaten throughout the tournament and overcoming the toughest of challenges on the biggest stage to etch her name on the trophy once again.
